    Description

    Gilda (Columbia, 1946). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B.
"There NEVER was a woman like Gilda!" And there has rarely been a movie poster more consistently coveted than this quintessential film noir one sheet graced with a smoldering image of the ultimate femme fatale, Rita Hayworth, George Macready and Glenn Ford join Hayworth as the players in a torrid love-hate triangle in this voyeuristic drama from director Charles Vidor. Hayworth is Gilda, caught between her new husband (Macready) and her former flame (Ford), against the backdrop of a Buenos Aires casino. This is the film that sealed Hayworth's legendary Hollywood status with her signature moment singing (or most likely lip-syncing) "Put the Blame on Mame," swathed in the now iconic black satin gown by designer Jean Louis (it even has its own Wikipedia page) and long, sensual gloves. For the day, the film's erotic overtones pushed the limits of the Production Code. Authenticity was important to Vidor, so much so that when Hayworth slaps Ford on both cheeks, she actually did hit him, resulting in two broken teeth. Posters from this film are ardently sought for the lovely images of Ms. Hayworth, and this iconic style B one sheet is particularly revered. She stands provocatively, and somewhat defiantly, cigarette in hand, head tilted to the side. We don't see this version of the one sheet often, and this example has benefited from professional restoration. Touchup has been applied to the folds, a tear in the top border that extends into the background, and pinholes in the corners. The top and right borders have also had some minor touchup. Don't let this timeless image of a silver screen goddess slip away! Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
