Description
The Golem (Paramount, 1920). Very Fine/Near Mint. Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").Certainly found in the pantheon of monumental horror films, The Golem is also considered a landmark of early German Expressionism. Somber, doleful cinematography and highly stylized sets put this film in a class of its own during the early 20th century. From actor-director Paul Wegener, it was inspired by a mythical creature of Jewish lore. Set in medieval Prague, the film depicts a rabbi (Albert Steinruck) who devises a plan to protect his people from the Emperor's order of expulsion. He creates a clay monster, called a Golem, to save the day. And lest romance be forgotten, a love triangle is added between the rabbi's daughter (Lyda Salmanova), the rabbi's assistant (Ernst Deutsch), and a messenger for the Emperor (Lathar Menthel). Heritage has offered a title card from this historically important film only twice before, and this is one of a very small number known to exist. The imposing Golem (Wegener himself) can be seen embarking on a furious rampage, stalking the countryside, with the rabbi's daughter in his arms. Not only is the title card almost impossible to find, this one is in outstanding condition. At 102 years old, it shows only pinholes in the borders and a smudge in the right border. Two tiny strips of paper tape on the verso. From the Wood Hall Collection.
