    Description

Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge by Otto Hunte (UFA, 1924). Very Fine-. Signed Mixed Media Set Rendering on Illustration Board (18.75" X 13") "Hun Camp."
Created by one of the foremost artists from the days of early German cinema, this set rendering by the renowned Otto Hunte depicts a scene from the second part of Fritz Lang's mythical epic. Hunte often worked with Lang on many of the director's most notable efforts within German Expressionism, showcasing a signature style that can be seen even in this comparatively rough illustration. Pictured is the nomadic camp of King Etzel's Huns, an image possessing a pictorial rhythm and surreal atmosphere recognizable in many of Hunte's most famous sets like Dr. Mabuse the Gambler, Spies, and Metropolis. Collectors familiar with the German language may note that the piece says "Part 1" in the lower left corner, however the painting is also notated as being from the "Hun Camp," which does not appear until the second part of the saga. Bearing the artist's signature in the lower right corner, this illustration has such signs of handling as slight edge wear, minor corner creases, small cracks at the edges, and unobtrusive stains. There are some smudges in the borders, however it is likely that these occurred during the creation process. The verso has scratches and surface paper loss that does not affect the grade, as none of the wear is visible from the front. The interior of the piece is in excellent condition, with none of these issues affecting Hunte's striking illustration.
