    Description

The Unknown (Gaumont Metro Goldwyn, 1927). Fine+ on Linen. Horizontal French Double Grande (90.25" X 64.75") C. Venabert Artwork.
Proud to present this large format poster for the first time, Heritage has the pleasure of offering the only known copy French double grande for The Unknown. When genius director Tod Browning and Lon Chaney got together, they created a masterful and disturbing horror classic that takes audiences for a shocking ride. Chaney stars as an imposter "armless" knife thrower in a circus act who falls in love with the owner's daughter, Nanon. Tragedy soon follows when the strongman (Norman Kerry) turns this into a love triangle. Chaney is mesmerizing as the tormented lover, with his co-star, a little known actress whose performance garnered much attention -- Joan Crawford. Professional restoration has corrected mild fold wear and separations, pinholes, creases, as well as some tears, a few of which extended into the image area. Also addressed were trims in the upper and lower borders following the edge of the printed area, please note that neither of the trims extended into the printing at any point. There is some post-restoration wear in the lower border that includes minor paper lifts, very small stains, and a couple of cracks in the airbrushing. Overall the poster's presentation is very impressive, both in size and skillful stone litho artwork.
