    Description

The Passion of Joan of Arc (L'Alliance Cinematograique Europeenne, 1928). French Grande (47.5" X 62.75"). R. Marcos Artwork.
Lauded as a masterpiece from the very first day of its release, Carl Theodore Dreyer's portrayal of France's beloved saint blends history with daring cinematography in a way never seen before in motion pictures. Rather than focusing on Joan of Arc's visions and victories like so many other adaptations, the director spent a year and a half poring over the court records of the heroine's actual trial to accurately tell the latter half of her tragic tale. His attention to detail wasn't limited to just the narrative material, but extended to an elaborate concrete set, refusing the actors' use of makeup, and, most importantly, the camera work and lighting. This was where the picture truly broke new ground using innovative angles and closeups for dramatic effect, and utilizing high contrast lighting on the English antagonists to enhance every bump and blemish on their faces. This illustration by R. Marcos carries over technique in this stunning poster, with its use of bold blocks of color. Hailing from the film's country of origin, this first time offer from Heritage has touchup to the folds and small tears. The poster still shows two ink stamps in the upper background, pinholes in the borders and background, toning, and some smudging. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
