    Description

The Birth of a Nation (Epoch Producing, 1918). Swedish One Sheet (22" X 34"). Einar Nerman Artwork.
Despite its highly controversial revisionism of Reconstruction, outright non-historical fabrications, and blatant stereotyping of African Americans, it is an undeniable fact that D.W. Griffith's masterwork is one of the most significant entries into the annals of filmmaking. As revolutionary as its subject matter, the technical aspects of this groundbreaking epic sent reverberations throughout the world of cinematography, pioneering new filming techniques, special effects, and artistry never before seen in pictures. With a design based off of the dramatic Klansman style one sheet, Einar Nerman reflects such innovative artistry with a spectacular illustration in his signature sharp contrasts and flowing movement, a powerful counterpart to Griffith's landmark production. As stunning as the day of its printing, the poster had a bend in the lower left corner, and a tear in the right border into the image with a small chip. Touchup has been applied to the folds and the borders have been airbrushed. Also included is a linen backed original snipe that reads, "Birth of a Nation for rent in Sweden only through the Swedish Cinema Theater Film Agency, Stockholm." Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
