Description
Soldiers of Fortune (Realart, 1921). Swedish Linocut One Sheet (23.25" X 35").Wallace Beery stars in this silent drama set during the Spanish-American War, and directed by Allan Dwan, with filming on locations at the San Diego Fairgrounds and Balboa Park, California. The status of the film is unknown and most likely lost. This art deco inspired poster is a Heritage first, and shows extraordinarily few signs of handling for its age. The top right corner was torn and repaired with tissue tape on the verso. There is minor edge wear, a light line of adhesive along the top edge on the verso, and a bottom left corner bend can be noted. The poster was produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. Heritage is pleased to present several Linocut Swedish posters in this auction, as they are exceedingly rare, with only a very few produced over a short period of time. Folded, Very Fine.
