    Description

    Greed (MGM, 1924). Window Card (14" X 22").
The original cut of Greed by director Erich Von Stroheim was 42 reels with a running time of over nine hours! Producer Irving Thalberg condensed it to just over two hours, resulting in a film with huge continuity gaps. The legend of the making of this film and its eventual destruction are of the greatest Hollywood lore and far outshine the actual film today. The fifth film to his credit, Von Stroheim spent months in the most extreme conditions creating an epic length film based on a popular novel of the day. He would eventually lose control of the film, the first of many mistakes that would eventually lead to his downfall as a director. American posters for this film are almost unheard of, and this wonderful original release window card is one of the few known to exist. Prior to being cleaned and pressed, the card had a stain in the center image area, small chips and tears in the borders, a torn bottom left corner, and a chip in the top right corner. Fantastic touch-up has this piece now displaying beautifully. Fine+.
