Devil in the Flesh (AFE, 1949). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Drama.
Put this title on your "really good films I should see" list. Paper has always been hard to find on this title, since it was a subtitled French film having spotty distribution throughout the US. Consider that this film was named by the National Board of Review "..the 5th best film of 1949," the date of the first showing in this country. It played 37 weeks in NY, leading tough critic Walter Winchell to call it "the best French film of the year." The NY Times hailed it as "..the best film from postwar France." It gets better. The poster art is signed in the plate by none other than the legendary "Hap" Hadley, who designed some of the best film posters ever..Buster Keaton's The General...Charlie Chaplin's The Circus...Clara Bow's Rough House Rosie...just to name a few. Starring Micheline Presle (who used Prelle on the US poster, because it was easier to pronounce), Gerard Philipe, Denise Grey, Jean Debucourt, Palau, Jacques Tati. Directed by Claude Autant-Lara. An unrestored poster that displays signs of use. May include light edge wear with small tears with archival tape on the verso, slight fold separations, very minor paper loss, light extra horizontal fold in the top border, and minor surface crinkles. Please see full-color, enlargeable image below for more details. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
