    Description

Adventures of Buffalo Bill (Essanay, 1917). One Sheet (28.5" X 42").
George Spoor and 'Bronco Billy' Anderson (filmdom's first cowboy star) produced over 1400 films during their ten year run as one of the top film production companies in the world. Among their many great contributions to the movie industry is the discovery of some of silent cinema's greatest stars, including Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, and Wallace Beery. In 1914, the Wm. Cody Historical Film Company and Essanay released a documentary detailing the life of Buffalo Bill Cody called The Indian Wars, which featured the re-creation of four major Indian battles of the late 1800s. Unfortunately, the U.S. government shelved the film after very little distribution. However, just after Cody's death in 1917, Essanay dusted off the older film and added new material as a tribute to the scout and pioneer showman. Sadly, the film no longer exists. Though prolific in their day, many Essanay posters have been lost to the ravages of time and remain an incredibly elusive prize for collectors. This wonderful stone litho portrait of the great showman has had professional restoration to address fold wear with some small chips and tears, pinholes in the background, and small tears in the outer edges of the background. There is a small bit of border replacement around the edges but the majority of the borders are intact. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
