    Description

Adventures of Buffalo Bill (Essanay, 1917). One Sheet (27" X 41").
George Spoor and 'Bronco Billy' Anderson (film's first cowboy star) produced over 1400 films during their ten year run as one of the top film production companies in the world. They used many of the great early stars: Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, etc. Though prolific, Essanay posters remain incredibly elusive for the collector. This lot contains one of the finest and rarest we've seen. It's a wonderful stone litho portrait of the real Buffalo Bill Cody, here promoting a documentary about his life. In 1914 Wm. Cody Historical Film Company and Essanay released a film called The Indian Wars which was a re-creation of four major Indian battles of the late 1800s. It was shelved after very little distribution by the U.S. Government. In 1917, just after Cody's death, Essanay dusted off the older film and added new material as a tribute to the scout and pioneer showman. The film no longer exists. Professional restoration has addressed a small tear in the lower right corner, some creasing in the background, and an inch of the borders has been replaced. Touchup has been applied to the folds, a small area to the right of the portrait, and in the upper background below the border. Fine+ on Linen.
