Wanted: John Herbert Dillinger (Department of Justice, 1934). Folded, Very Good/Fine. Wanted Poster (8" X 13.5") DS.
Offered in this lot is a very rare, authentic wanted poster for notorious gangster John Dillinger offering $10,000. for his capture, or $5,000 for information leading to his arrest. It comes from the United States Department of Justice - or, as we know it, the F.B.I., dated June 25, 1934, from its director, John Edgar Hoover. On the back is a list of Department of Justice offices around the U.S. with their phone numbers. a date is added to that - "7/22/34" in pencil, the date Dillinger was killed outside a movie theater in Chicago. John Dillinger was America's most wanted outlaw at the time, accused of robbing multiple banks across the country and murdering a police officer. Special Agent Melvin Purvis was credited with Dillinger's death. The poster has pinholes in the corners and interior, tears in the border (with cellophane tape on the back), fold wear and creases, and edge wear. Original wanted posters for Dillinger are very hard to find. This is a very desirable collectible due to the historical value and Dillinger's notoriety.
