M (Nero-Film AG, 1931). German Poster (37" X 83"). The film that made a star of Peter Lorre was directed by Fritz Lang of "Metropolis" fame, and was taken from the real life case of a child killer, the "monster of Dusseldorf" Peter Kuerten. "M" is an early German sound film masterpiece, a true crime story based on the unspeakable acts of a serial child murderer. When nightly police raids fail to find the criminal, disrupting thieves' and beggars' "business as usual," the underworld mobilizes to find him themselves. Today, "M" consistently ranks among the top 75 of the Internet Movie Database's top 250 films. Although "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) is traditionally credited as the first film noir, there can be little doubt that this film anticipated many essential features of the genre. This original release German three sheet poster has enlarged pin holes with tears, and fold wear with separations and chips. There are a small number of scuffs and holes, and a tear in the image area. The poster has been mounted on linen to and some minor restoration has been done. This country of origin three sheet poster is the very copy pictured in "The Movie Poster Book" edited by Steve Shapiro and published by E.P. Dutton in 1979. It was purchased from the Shapiro collection, and comes from the consignor who purchased the poster from him. Note, this poster has not had any major portions restored. The previous owner of this poster, Steve Shapiro, seems to have had two copies of this poster. One was missing the entire bottom panel. It was later restored by recreating the entire lower panel using this clean copy as the model and has since been seen in several auctions. This is not that copy, but the better copy which was purchased from Shapiro by the consignor in the mid 1980s. Fine on Linen.
