    Description

G-Men (First National, 1935). Very Good on Linen. Three Sheet (41.75" X 77.75").
One of only two known copies in the world, Heritage Auctions is pleased to make our first ever offer of this fantastic three sheet from one of the best gangster films ever made. William Keighley directs this crime-drama based on Gregory Miller's book Public Enemy No. 1, starring James Cagney, Margaret Lindsay, Ann Dvorak, and Robert Armstrong. When the Production Code came down hard on the studios in 1934, Warner Brothers decided to reinvent the Gangster film, a genre the studio had practically created. The result was films like G-Men, starring their former number one gangster, James Cagney, as a crusading officer with the Department of Justice. Even with the change of focus from criminals to public defenders, Hollywood turned out some of its most classic gangster films in the 1930s, several of which had roles that were tailor-made for Cagney. After being skillfully conserved, this poster no longer shows edge and fold wear, fold separations, pinholes, and creases. Also corrected were tears into the interior, scattered chips, and a cut in Cagney's tie and shirt. The poster had a trim from the bottom border into the lower background, but did not affect any of the credit text, as well as a diagonal trim from the lower left corner extending along the left border and veering slightly into the background. The green background at the top had been trimmed following the outlines of Cagney and Margaret Lindsey, however this did not affect their images. The borders and title have been airbrushed, and there is some faint staining still visible in the image. After these expert repairs, the poster presents a great dramatic effect with its tense illustration and classy typography, a rare and highly desirable find for serious collectors.
