    Description

    Bordertown (Warner Bros., 1935). Fine+ on Linen. Italian 4 - Fogli (54.5" X 77") Luigi Martinati Art.
Bette Davis gave one of her most nuanced performances in this exciting crime drama, taking the bold choice to portray an insane villain for her character, an unusual role for a 1930s starlet. By 1935, Davis was no stranger to risky roles, having garnered critical acclaim for her performance as the abusive Mildred Rogers in 1933's Of Human Bondage, her breakthrough role. Paul Muni plays the object of the murderous Davis' obsessions in an emotive performance, all culminating in a breathtaking courtroom scene. Davis in particular was hailed for her realistic portrayal of a woman with a increasingly deteriorating mental state, drawing personal reference from her own sister's psychological disorder. Based closely off of the moody graphics of the mesmerizing U.S. one sheet, Luigi Martinati takes a captivating turn with Bette Davis' unbalanced vixen, using sizzling colors far more vibrant than its American counterpart. Printed in stone litho, this poster has had partial restoration to fold wear and separations, creases, pinholes, small chips, and tears, including a tear from the left border into Bette Davis' arm. Still visible is foxing and some staining, and there is slight rippling in the linen. This poster has only been offered once before at Heritage and would be a stunning acquisition for collectors.
