The Lady Eve (Paramount, 1946). First Post-War Release French Grande (47" X 62.5") Boris Grinsson Artwork.Preston Sturges wrote and directed this wicked comedy about the battles waged by men and women. Only in a Sturges' film would the romantic leads be an ophiologist (Henry Fonda, a snake expert) and a card shark (Barbara Stanwyck). They fall in love despite an ongoing con, jump out of love over a misunderstanding, then stumble back in love -- despite an ongoing revenge plot. The barbed humor sprung from Sturges writing the script while awaiting his third divorce. During the filming, Sturges was unfailingly polite to Fonda and Stanwyck, but he used his stock company actors to take out his frustrations. When he couldn't get his stars to do a scene the way he wanted, he grumbled at William Demarest (who wasn't in the scene itself), "And don't talk so damn fast!" There is fold wear with crossfold separations and a fold split on the right center horizontal fold, toning on the borders and fold lines, and foxing and staining on the top and left borders. There are pieces of museum tape on the verso of the folds. Wonderful artwork by Boris Grinsson. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
