Description

The Lady Eve (Paramount, 1941). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
Romance meets screwball in this Preston Sturges comedy, telling the tale of a cunning con artist and the poor, but rich, dope she intends to fleece. Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, both recently nominated for Academy Awards in leading roles, prove to be just as skilled at the comedic as they are the dramatic, embracing the rapid-fire stream of jokes and gags with an effusive enthusiasm that spills straight from the screen into the audience. Based off of the short story Two Bad Hats, Sturges' adaptation struck just the right balance between quick witted satire and perfectly timed slapstick, resulting in an Oscar nomination in Best Writing: Original Story for author Monckton Hoffe. This one sheet could once be found on display at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grand Lobby Gallery, and has had restoration applied to slight fold wear and separation, a couple of minor paper lifts, small tears, and a few chips in the borders. Still apparent are a few unobtrusive stains and smudges.
