    Description

Out West (Paramount, 1919). Folded, Very Fine. Swedish Linocut One Sheet (23.25" X 35").
Fatty Arbuckle, Buster Keaton and Al St. John star in this satire on the Western genre. Arbuckle arrives in the town of Mad Dog Gulch after being tossed off of a train and pursued by Native Americans. He and the local saloon proprietor (Keaton) join forces to stymie Wild Bill Hickup (St. John), who has his sights on a Salvation Army girl (Alice Lake). Paper from this film is exceedingly scarce, and Heritage is thrilled to present the Swedish one sheet, done in linocut printing and inspired by the art deco style of the era by prolific poster artist Eric Rohman. Produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. This rare piece has light edge and fold wear, slight fold separations, and a couple of minor nicks in the left border. There are very faint stains, a few dust shadows, and minute tears. Folded, Very Fine.
