At the Circus (MGM, 1939). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27.5" X 41") Style D. Al Hirschfeld Artwork.
A fun and whimsical piece sure to be of note to classic comedy fans, Heritage is pleased to make our very first offering of this exceptionally rare one sheet. As a follow up to the enormously successful films A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races, the Marx Brothers are at it again in this third outing for MGM Studios with a plethora of wit and plenty of gags. Using some of the funniest dialogue of the entire MGM phase of their career, only the Brothers could make a story about a down-on-his-luck circus owner an absolute delight. Boasting artwork from lauded caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, who created numerous illustrations of the Brothers over the course of decades, many consider this style D one sheet to be the artist's best piece depicting the madcap trio. This poster has benefitted from professional restoration to some fold wear and separation, pinholes, as well as a few chips at the borders and crossfolds. Also addressed were small tears, in addition to a tear that extended from the lower border into the grass in the lower image. There are some faint stains still visible. Nobody in the history of the cinema could match the Marx Brothers' zany antics and poster material for their films is some of the most sought after in the hobby.
