DescriptionBordertown (Warner Bros., 1935). Fine+ on Linen. Italian 4 - Fogli (54.5" X 77") Luigi Martinati Art.
One of Italy's best poster artists of all time, Luigi Martinati, created his own sizzling take on the American graphics for this crime picture, using much livelier colors and portraits than what can be found on the domestic one sheet. Both stars Paul Muni and Bette Davis give spirited performances in the film, weaving together a story of obsession, insanity, and murder. Using the behaviors of her own psychologically troubled sister as an example, Davis' subtle portrayal of a woman slowly descending into insanity had an authenticity yet to be seen in a Hollywood production. Director Archie Mayo and the studio executives at Warner Bros. insisted that she redo the scene as an over-the-top, histrionic breakdown, but Bette refused unless test audiences couldn't tell that her character had fallen into madness. Needless to say, her great acting instincts were right on the money and she never had to do a reshoot. This gorgeous stone litho poster has had partial corrections to the folds, pinholes, creases, minor chips, and tears, which includes a tear extending from the left border into Davis' arm. There is some staining and foxing that is still visible, and the linen has some slight rippling. No doubt about it, any collector would be lucky to own such a fine piece in their collection.
Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000.
