    Description

Tarzan and His Mate (MGM, 1934). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style D, William Galbraith Crawford Artwork.
Making its first ever appearance at Heritage, this beautiful first printing one sheet is one of the rarest and most desirable items for fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs' famous wildman. Its rich stone litho printing bursts with verdant color, a vibrant illustration created by the great editorial cartoonist William Galbraith Crawford. In an attempt to avoid confusion with 1932's smash hit Tarzan the Ape Man, the studio branded the poster with the text "It's New!" so that audiences would know this was an original movie, and not a reissue. It is believed that this text marks the poster as a rare first printing, as second printings did not have that identifying declaration. Olympic medalist Johnny Weissmuller returns with Maureen O'Sullivan in their second adventure as Tarzan and Jane, considered by many fans to be the best of the entire series. Despite its popularity, Tarzan and His Mate would never see a theatrical re-release. Just two months later, the enforcement of the prudish Production Code came into full effect, refusing to approve a film featuring such violence, skimpy outfits, and a nude swimming scene. Already an incredible piece by itself, this one sheet received skilled touchup by the late poster restoration expert Igor Edelman, repairing fold wear, a few small chips and pinholes in the corners, slight border tears, and a minor chip at the top of the vertical fold. Accompanying this fine poster is a beautiful wooden frame hand-carved by Edelman himself, crawling with all sorts of lifelike jungle flora and fauna. The poster and frame are a stunning sight together, making this a truly one-of-a-kind piece any collector would be proud to own. Very Fine on Linen.
