    Description

Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan in Tarzan and His Mate Publicity Stills (MGM, 1934). Stills (2) (8" X 10"). Vintage black and white, single weight, glossy stills. the sequel to Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), the film that launched the career of star Johnny Weissmuller, this is considered by many to be the very best film in the franchise. A decidedly pre-Code film, this picture is notorious for its famed underwater nude scene, in which Maureen O'Sullivan (or rather her body double, Olympic swimming star Josephine McKim) goes skinny dipping during a quiet moment with Tarzan (the scene was eventually cut from all release prints, but has recently been discovered and restored to home video versions). It was also the first and only time O'Sullivan, as Jane, would wear her skimpy two-piece outfit, due to objections from the Hays office. Offered here are two wonderful stills, both of which exhibit some mild toning, and both of which have writing in pen and studio snipes on the reverse. The images are spectacular, some of the best you're likely to find from this fan favorite classic. Very Fine+.
