Description

On the Waterfront (Columbia, 1954). Italian 4 - Foglio (55" X 78").
This Oscar-winning 1954 film about mob violence and corruption among longshoremen stars Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a has-been prizefighter in his mid-twenties working the docks for the local gang boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). Thanks to its intensity and rich story, the picture won Oscars for Best Picture, Actor (Brando), Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint), Director (Elia Kazan) and Screenplay (Budd Schulberg). This exceptional Italian 4 foglio is quite simply the best poster made for the film. Anselmo Ballester created an image that evoked the violence on the waterfront symbolized by the grappling hook. Brando, as the lone crusader, breaks through that violence. The image of his birds (peace and freedom) fill the sky behind him, punctuating the message. The poster had fold wear and cross fold separation with some minor chipping within the image and on the borders. Careful restoration work has minimized these issues, making for a poster that displays wonderfully. Fine+ on Linen.
