Casablanca (Warner Brothers, 1947). First Post-War French Release Double Grande (63" X 90") Artwork Attributed to Hervé Morvan.
In 1942, Hal B. Wallis and Michael Curtiz hired several talented writers and A-list actors to make what they hoped would be a successful war drama. Instead, they created a legend. Casablanca is possibly the most beloved film of all time, ranking at the top of virtually every list of Hollywood classics. Winning much-deserved awards in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing, this film was also Humphrey Bogart's first nomination for Best Actor and perhaps his most defining role. Few other films have ever left such an indelible mark on Hollywood, nor ever created so many characters, scenes, music, and, most of all, lines that are so instantly recognizable. This French Double Grande is exceptionally rare with only two other copies known. The artwork of Bogart and Bergman is very stylized and it's believed to have been done by Hervé Morvan. Professional conservation has restored this poster to the same beauty as the day it was printed after correcting light fold wear with slight separation and minor crossfold chips. Touchup has also been applied to a few border tears and some small scattered pinholes. A few of the pinholes extended into the image, including a couple in Ingrid Bergman's forehead. There was once sun exposure that has been corrected with color enhancement. Still visible is a thin dust shadow along the edges, but this does nothing to detract from the exquisite beauty of this wonderful piece. Fine on Linen.
