World-Record Dracula Paces Heritage’s Movie Posters Auction To Nearly $3 Million

Style A One Sheet From 1931 Classic Brings $525,800

Most valuable movie poster ever sold
DALLAS, Texas (Nov. 20, 2017) — A 1931 Style A One Sheet of one of the most popular movies of all time set a new world record for a movie poster to headline Heritage Auctions' Movie Posters Auction Nov. 18-19 in Dallas, Texas, in which more than 1,800 bidders drove the total sales far beyond the low pre-auction estimate, ultimately realizing more than $2.8 million.

Multiple bidders pursued a rare Dracula (Universal, 1931) One Sheet Style A until it ultimately hammered at $525,800. One of just two examples of the poster known to exist, this poster spent many years in the family of Lt. Col. George J. Mitchell, Jr., an Associate Member of the American Society of Cinematographers.

"The Dracula poster is a rare, important poster that sparked intense bidding among some of our elite collectors," Heritage Auctions Vintage Posters Director Grey Smith said, "Considering the sheer beauty of the poster and the timeless popularity of the film, it's not a surprise that the demand was so high.

"It is a matter of opinion, but this poster probably is the most beautiful of all of the styles, and one of only two styles that pictures Bela Lugosi in realistic terms or a faithful rendering – the other is a photographic image."

A Casablanca (Warner Brothers, 1947) First Post-War Release French Grande with Pierre Pigeot Artwork climbed to $239,000 before the final hammer fell. Also extremely rare, this poster marks the first original release French grande ever offered through Heritage Auctions. Only a handful of copies are known to exist of this poster from the film that was ranked third on the American Film Institute's 2009 poll of the top films ever made.

Another gem from the same classic film that produced three Oscar awards and nominations for two more, a Casablanca (United Artists, R-1962), Italian 2-Fogli with Silvano "Nano" Campeggi Artwork soared well past its high pre-auction estimate before ultimately realizing $107,550. This was the first copy of this extraordinary Italian poster ever offered by Heritage Auctions.

AnInvasion of the Saucer-Men (American International, 1957) with Original Albert Kallis Gouache Poster Artwork sparked a frenzy of competitive bids before ultimately bringing $107,550. It features the artwork of Kallis, an American artist who served as American International Pictures' art director for 17 years and is widely recognized for producing some of the most eye-catching and gruesome images in the history of movie posters.

A The Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1925) One Sheet Style L realized $95,600. One of Universal's early horror hits, the poster is Norman Kerry in his role as the valiant Raoul de Chagny in his masquerade costume. A carefully restored stone lithograph, this is another that was offered by Heritage for the first time in this auction.
