Description
The Big Trail (Fox, 1930). Australian Daybill (15" X 40").Shot in both wide screen 70mm and in standard format 35mm, this was intended to be the epic of all epic Westerns and certainly achieves much for the time period. John Wayne was given his real break in this film, as Gary Cooper, who wanted the role, would not be loaned by Paramount. He displays the raw talents and mannerisms that would latter become his trademark. The expensive shot-on-location movie was financially unsuccessful as a result of being the first widescreen release during a time when theatres would not change over due to the encroachments of the Great Depression. After making The Big Trail, Wayne found stardom only in low-budget serials and features, mostly B-Westerns. It would take another nine years, and the film Stagecoach, to return Wayne to mainstream movies. Offered in this lot is a very rare prize; a large format poster from this early classic. The gorgeous buffalo hunt artwork is by Australian artist Montgomery Campbell. There was a small tack hole next to the title and small chips and tears along the left border. The poster had wear and small tears to the upper imprint area of the day bill and has now been restored to its former glory. Fine+ on Linen.
