Description

Big Boy (Warner Brothers, 1930). Lobby Card (11" X 14").
We're excited to present a portrait lobby card missing from just about every major collection we've seen. This near mint pristine color example of Al Jolson performing as his alter ego "Gus" is a real find. Only the uninitiated don't know that openly Jewish Jolson was anything but a "racist." As early as 1911 he did battle with Broadway producers over anti-black discrimination. This film was banned in the Deep South, not because Jolson was in blackface, but because of the scene in the film where the wicked plantation comes with whip in hand to Jolson and yells at him, "Dust my boots, boy." Jolson answers him, saying, "I don't dust no one's boots, I is free!" This was the film version of Jolson's highly successful sold-out Broadway play of the same name that he also toured throughout the US for over three years, almost single-handedly introducing an entire generation of white Americans to African-American music. There's only a tiny lower corner bump. Near Mint.
