Gone with the Wind (MGM, 1939). Lobby Displays (4) (18" X 19").
Noted artist Armando Seguso created most of the major artwork for the posters and promotional displays for Selznick's triumphant film. One of his most sought after creations was a series of four "oilette" portraits, featuring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland. This lot contains all four, in the desired "recessed frame" edition, with original tassel and linen type tape hangers on the reverse. Near the end of his career, Seguso would remark that he was prouder of his paintings for Gone With the Wind (done in a hectic three weeks with the legendary taskmaster Selznick breathing down his neck) than any of his other film work in over 30 years in the business. The artwork is clean and intact with only a horizontal scratch in de Havilland's dress and small nicks in her hair. There are minor chips and wear in the frames themselves, except for Leigh's. The Gable has minor staining in three edges. The Leigh portrait has the artist's signature clearly displayed, and on the back of the Gable handwritten in pencil is a stern underlined "MUST BE RETURNED" (We're betting they weren't!) We sold a pristine set of these rare posters in 2004 for $27,600! Fine-.
