Description
Hop-a-long Cassidy (Paramount, 1935). One Sheet (27" X 41").Clarence E. Mulford's cowboy character Hopalong Cassidy first appeared in a series of novels at the turn of the century. Hopalong made his screen debut in 1935 in this film, with silent star William Boyd in the lead role. Bill Cassidy earns his nickname after being shot in the leg trying to aid his young friend Johnny Nelson (Jimmy Ellison) at the Bar 20, in the midst of a war between cattle ranchers. With the aid of oldtimer Uncle Ben (George "Gabby" Hayes) Hopalong is able to discover who the real rustlers are and to clear Nelson's sweetheart's (Mary Meeker) father's name. This picture began the most successful series of the era, its immediate and enormous popularity launched over sixty subsequent Hopalong pictures through 1948, each featuring trusty sidekick Gabby. William Boyd, very astutely purchased the rights to the character and the films, approaching NBC in 1949 to develop what would be the first network Western television series, making Hopalong Cassidy a household name that would endure for generations. Original paper from this seminal Western is nearly impossible to come by, with probably less than a handful of posters existing today, as we know of only one other copy. This colorful sheet shows pinholes, mainly in the corners, edge wear and small stains at the top, small tears in the borders, bends in the lower right corner, and a minor chip in the lower left corner. To offer such a clean, unrestored one sheet from this important title is a real delight, and we know this gem deserves a place of honor in a top collection. Fine.
