The New Audioscopiks (MGM, 1938). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Although the 3-D movie craze of the 1950s is quite well known, few realize that anaglyphic (red & green) film processes were developed quite a bit earlier. The first 3-D process was patented in the late 1890s, and the first anaglyphic film was shown to audiences in 1915. Jacob Leventhal, an early pioneer of the process, released his first stereoscopic shorts in 1923, and partnered with John Norling in 1935 to produce the Audioscopiks series for MGM. The first film in the series, narrated by popular commentator Pete Smith, received an Oscar nomination in 1936 for Best Short Subject, and was followed by this picture, The New Audioscopiks, in 1938. These were typically collections of short scenes, made intriguing by the use of the anaglyphic process, which would fully come into its own in 1952 with the release of Bwana Devil. The exciting poster offered here, which perfectly captures the thrill of these early 3-D experiments, had some overall wrinkling, fold wear with slight separations at the fold lines, a 3" tear in the title area, a tape lift with tearing in the top center, and a corner bend in the bottom right. Professional restoration has handsomely addressed these issues, making this a splendid example of an extremely rare and hard-to-find poster. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
