Description

Beau Brummel (Warner Brothers, 1924). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A. John Barrymore stars in the title role as the 18th-century British fashion plate. Due to his magnificent clothing, style and quick wit, Brummel is a favorite of the Prince of Wales (Willard Louis) and with several ladies, though his heart belongs to the beautiful, unobtainable Lady Margery Avanley (played by 17-year-old Mary Astor, who during filming was carrying on a most passionate affair with her leading man). The arrogant Brummel falls from grace after insulting the Prince and then refusing to apologize. The final scenes of Brummel in an asylum, dressed in rags, but with still enough pride to turn away his true love rather than allow her to throw her life away on him are classic Barrymore. His performance was highly praised upon the films release and remains one of the best film performances of his career. This gorgeous one sheet has never been offered at auction before that we are aware of. The poster has been linenbacked. It has some border chipping and a chip which just barely extended into the lower right corner of the teal colored field. There was minor vertical fold wear and a tear which runs from the right border just below the top horizontal fold into the art background. There is another tear which runs from the upper border into the "ry" of "Barrymore." The artwork and appearance of this poster must be seen to be believed! It is outstanding. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
