Description
Murders in the Rue Morgue (Universal, 1932). Window Card (14" X 22").Robert Florey, having lost the chance to direct Frankenstein (1931) when James Whale was selected for the job, was offered this equally horrifying project, an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale. Bela Lugosi, a year after his success in Dracula, is terrific as Dr. Mirakle, a carnival showman/ mad scientist who experiments with mixing the blood of his pet gorilla with that of a series of prostitutes he murders. When he realizes he needs a virgin for the tests to work, he sets his sights on Camille L'Espanaye (Sidney Fox). Poor Camille's mother is murdered by the gorilla, the girl is imprisoned in Mirakle's lab, and only her boyfriend Pierre Dupin (Leon Ames a.k.a. Waycoff) can solve the case. With the dark and expressionistic cinematography of Karl Freund, this eerie thriller is a masterpiece of the genre and widely admired by critics today. Paper from this top title is scarce, especially in its original unrestored condition such as this wonderful item, which is guaranteed to be an authentic original release window card. It shows a chip at the top, a smaller one in the top right corner, and light edge wear at the bottom. There are two tears at the right border and one in the left, backed by archival tape. The dramatic artwork is by Karoly Grosz. For serious fans of the horror genre, images of Lugosi from his early classics are always the ultimate prize. Very Good/Fine.
