Orson Welles Autographed Letter (undated).
Generally regarded as one of the finest director/filmmakers who ever lived, Orson Welles first came to national prominence with his Mercury Theater presentation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds", a dramatization that threw a nation into a state of panic. Wells continued his rise to fame with such blockbuster films as "Citizen Kane", "The Third Man", "The Muppet Movie" and "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow". It is, however, his role as spokesman for the Gallo Wineries ("We will sell no wine before its time") for which he is most fondly remembered. Offered here is an intriguing piece of Welles memorabilia: a signed letter on Mercury Theatre stationary. Undated, the letter reads, "Dear Mr. Mason-Smith: Thank you for your letter. I am sorry that, because the program in question has caused distress to some of our listeners and because of the author's rights in the material, we are unable to accede to your request with respect to re-broadcasting the program, or sending you a copy of the script. Very Sincerely, Orson Welles (OW:aw)". Obviously, the program in question is, indeed, "The War of the Worlds", making this an even more desirable piece of correspondence. Attractively framed and matted to an overall size of approximately 13.75" x 16.25" overall, the piece is boldly signed in black ink and appears to be in excellent condition. A great piece from a great filmmaker, this is a unique opportunity that may never again present itself.
