Latest Heritage Internet Movie Poster Auction 55011
Dallas, Texas: Heritage's latest Internet Movie Poster Auction (IMPA) sale #55011 ended Sunday, January 16, with 203 lots offered. 164 bidders placed bids, and 80 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $13.402.15 for 195 lots (96.05% of lots offered).
A few highlights from the January 16 IMPA sale are:
Tobor the Great (Republic, 1954). One Sheet (27" X 41"). This was Republic Studios' early attempt at science fiction in a story about scientists trying to develop a robot to use in space travel. This robot is endowed with human emotions, and becomes pals with the creator's grandson. Trouble erupts when evil communist spies try to capture Tobor (that's robot spelled backwards), to make him do their evil bidding. This film has some of the most attractive posters of the 1950s sci-fi genre, and material for this title has always been somewhat scarce. This poster has been linen backed and has had a chip from the lower left corner, border only, replaced. The poster had a piece missing from the centerpoint of the poster which is about 6" X 3" at its widest point which has been amazingly restored. The work is very well done. There was small amount of wear at the other two centerpoints and pinholes in corners. Restoration makes this poster appear very clean. Good/Very Good on Linen. REALIZED: $575.
Two Fisted Sheriff (Columbia, 1937). One Sheet (27" X 41"). After being signed to a contract with Paramount in 1930, Charles Starrett would play many secondary roles until 1935. That year he signed a deal with Columbia to star in western films to replace the aging Tim McCoy and to compete with Republic and Gene Autry for the money they were making. This was one of the early films Starrett did for Columbia which would last for the next seventeen years and encompass some 115 westerns. This poster depicts a beautiful image of the young Starrett. This poster has been linen backed and prior to backing had some chipping in the border and some fold wear. With the restoration the poster now displays beautifully. Very Fine on Linen. REALIZED: $488.75.
Bus Stop (20th Century Fox, 1956). One Sheet (27" X 41"). A classic performance by Marilyn Monroe punctuates this light hearted romantic comedy about a girl who longs to find a real man and escape her small town life. What she gets instead is a rodeo cowboy who loves her a lot but has no future in sight. One of the movies highlights is Monroe's wonderfully dreadful rendition of That Old Black Magic. There are corner pinholes, light surface wrinkles and some creases at the top and bottom. The poster displays very well. Fine/Very Fine. REALIZED: $460.
The Angry Red Planet (American International, 1960). One Sheet (27" X 41"). A classic, sci-fi film featuring two astronauts who return to Earth and tell of their mission to Mars. The poster depicts one of the film's monsters, a composite bat, rat and crab alien, and the graphics make it one of the more appealing posters of the genre. Minimal restoration to light fold line wear, otherwise the poster is in excellent condition. Very Fine+ on Linen. REALIZED: $402.50.
The Phantom of the West (Mascot, 1931). One Sheet (27" X 41"). This was Mascot Pictures' second all-talkie sound serial, starring Tom Tyler. Tyler was a boxer and weightlifter when he entered films as a stuntman in 1924, and quickly rose to stardom at FBO Studios, the forerunner to RKO, as a cowboy hero. This is a gorgeous stone-lithographed poster and is from the 7th Chapter, "The Price of Silence." This poster has been linen backed and prior to backing had minor border chipping and fold wear. All of this was corrected in restoration and now appears in very nice shape and displays well. Fine/Very Fine on Linen. REALIZED: $322.
