Latest Heritage Internet Movie Poster Auction 54121
Dallas, Texas: Heritage's first Internet Movie Poster Auction (IMPA) sale #54121 ended Sunday, December 19, with 240 lots offered. 200 bidders placed bids, and 88 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $24,990.15 for 239 lots (99.58% of lots offered).
A few highlights from the 12/19/04 IMPA sale are:
Ghost of Frankenstein (Universal, 1942).
Insert (14" X 36"). Released Friday the 13th this was the fourth in the Frankenstein series from Universal. Karloff had by this time decided to give up monster roles in favor of his wonderful mad doctor turns. Basil Rathbone was busy being Sherlock Holmes, so the part of Rathbone's famous monster creator, Wolf, was rewritten as his son, Ludwig. Cedric Hardwicke took over the mad scientist role from Mr. Rathbone and the series continued. Reports from the set told of how the make-up man, try as he may, just could not make the prosthetics originally formed for Karloff fit on a slighter Lon Chaney who stepped in to take over the role of Frankenstein's monster. This poster grades as: Good/Very Good. This poster has been paper backed and had paint retouch done to the three fold lines. Also airbrush work was done to chips in the top border and several small chips around the border. Very professional airbrush work was done to restore missing chips of paper in the monster's forehead which extended slightly into the bridge of his nose. This work was very well done and the piece looks tremendous. REALIZED: $3,737.50.
Dead of Night (Universal, 1946).
Three Sheet (41" X 81"). This was the first horror film which contained short episodes, each more thrilling than the one before. When a man arrives at a cabin, he finds several other people there. They each relate the nightmares they've been having. The film was incredibly inventive and intense for 1945, and in many places the film was considered too frightening to be shown! This poster grades as: Very Fine+ on Linen. Posters for this title have always been difficult to come by; this amazing Three Sheet is one of the few examples known. This poster has just the most minimal fold line touchup and border touchup. REALIZED: $2,530.
Jailhouse Rock (MGM, 1957).
One Sheet (27" X 41"). Long before MTV came along, the movies gave teenagers a look at rock n' roll stars of the 1950s and 1960s performing their current hits. Elvis Presley was literally the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" when he gyrated his way to on-screen success in "Jailhouse Rock." This poster grades as: Fine+. This poster has been put on linen and restored with minor airbrush work in Elvis' forehead due to small piece missing at intersection of two folds. There is the typical foldline re-touch. This poster has had no other missing paper and the colors are bright. REALIZED: $1,937.75.
The Uninvited (Paramount, 1944).
One Sheet (27" X 41"). This is an original vintage theater used poster for the film starring Ray Milland and Gail Russell. Directed by Lewis Allen. This poster grades as: Fine This poster grades as such due to: This beautiful poster has a pinhole in each corner and slight fold separation at centerpoints. REALIZED: $632.50.
Invaders From Mars (20th Century Fox, R-1955).
One Sheet (27" X 41"). This is an original vintage theater used poster for this science fiction classic starring Helena Carter and Jimmy Hunt. Directed by William Cameron Menzies. This poster grades as: Very Fine+ This poster grades as such due to: This gorgeous poster is flat folded and has one vertical fold in the left side. It has only the most minor right border chipping.
