Description

The War of the Worlds (Paramount, 1953). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Half Sheet (22" X 28.25") Style B.
This striking half sheet for The War of the Worlds captures the fiery devastation of H. G. Wells' timeless tale, reimagined for Cold War audiences with sleek, menacing Martian war machines dominating the skies. Directed by Byron Haskin and produced by George Pal, the film amazed audiences with its Academy Award-winning special effects, dazzling use of three-strip Technicolor, and a sinister reimagining of Wells' steampunk-inspired invaders. It is little surprise that this adaptation stood as the definitive cinematic version of the story for more than fifty years, its unforgettable imagery and groundbreaking spectacle firmly establishing the model for alien invasion films to come. Posters for the picture are similarly prized, with this example particularly noteworthy for its vivid graphics and rare depiction of the Martian craft unleashing destruction upon Earth. The borders have been somewhat heavily airbrushed, while careful touchup has been applied within the image to address edge and fold wear, pinholes, creases, several tears, and tape stain.
