Description

Ed Wood (Buena Vista, 1994). Fine on Board. The Death Kiss Prop Poster (40" X 60").
Offered here is a 40" X 60" used as a prop in Tim Burton biopic of the "worst director" in cinema history, Ed Wood. This piece is seen in Wood's apartment, establishing his fandom for Bela Lugosi, who appeared in the 1932 film. The two later collaborate on Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 from Outer Space. The poster consists of a hand-colored photogelatin poster mounted to a large sheet of tag board with green paint remnants along the perimeter. Two typed Astor Pictures labels are affixed to the board verso, one dated 1949 and another dated 1950, indicating the piece was rented for screenings of The Death Kiss, both of which instruct that the item be returned to Astor after use. It also retains a Railroad Express shipping label. Given that the backside of the poster is never seen in the film and the general appearance of the labels, it does not appear that they were added by a zealous set decorator intent on verisimilitude, and suggest this is an actual vintage studio-created display. The poster and board exhibits chips and tears around the outer edge, as well as a pair of holes bored in the upper area for hanging. A wonderful artifact of both Lugosi's career and an acclaimed biopic of a genre pioneer. From the Estate of Keif Fromm.
