Description
Selfish Yates (Artcraft, 1918). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 41").William S. Hart (1864-1946) was a pioneering American film actor, screenwriter, director, and producer who became one of the first great stars of the silent Western genre. Known for his stern demeanor, authenticity, and moral complexity, Hart defined the cowboy hero as a brooding, conflicted figure, far removed from the flashy, carefree cowpokes of dime novels. Before entering films, Hart had a successful theatrical career, even performing in Shakespearean roles. Making his film debut in 1914, he quickly rose to fame through a series of Westerns that emphasized realism and moral redemption. Hart's characters often started as outlaws or loners who found conscience and purpose through acts of sacrifice or justice, an archetype that deeply influenced future Westerns. Selfish Yates was directed by William S. Hart, who also stars in the title role. Backed to linen, there has been expert touch-up to address wear and splits along some folds, the lower right corner was replaced as has a portion of the upper left corner, and the borders have been airbrushed to address pinholes, small splits, and some chips. Thanks to these efforts, the poster presents beautifully and will be a wonderful display piece in any collection of western movie posters. Only a second time offering from Heritage, and the last one was in 2007!
