Description
Greed (MGM, 1925). Fine+ on Linen. Swedish Poster (34.75" X 47.5") Eric Rohman Artwork.Greed, directed by Erich von Stroheim, is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and influential films of the silent era, celebrated for its stark realism, psychological intensity, and unflinching portrayal of human avarice. Based on Frank Norris's novel McTeague, the story follows a San Francisco dentist whose life descends into obsession, betrayal, and murder after he and his wife win a lottery, devastating not only their lives but also those of others around them. The film starred Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, and Jean Hersholt, whose characters are all dramatically altered by the corrupting influence of sudden wealth. Originally shot at over 40 reels, more than 10 hours of screen time, Greed was drastically cut after studio clashes, first by von Stroheim himself and later by MGM under Irving Thalberg, who ultimately removed the director from the project and had June Mathis reduce it to 10 reels for release. Despite the severe edits and the loss of its original footage, the surviving version remains a powerful testament to von Stroheim's uncompromising vision and a landmark in cinematic history. Presented here for only the second time in Heritage's history is this striking Swedish poster for the film, Eric Rohman's bold artwork brilliantly conveying Greed's themes. Touchup, airbrushing, and some replacement has addressed edge and fold wear, creases, fold separation, a few tears, some chips, and trimming along parts of the borders. Some flaws may remain lightly visible.
