Description

The Bull-Dogger (Norman, 1921). Fine+ on Cardstock. Trimmed One Sheet (25" X 39").
Several filmmakers between the 1900s and 1920s developed a film industry in the U.S. that prominently featured Black casts in positive roles and made by a number of Black directors, writers, producers, and other crew members that ran alongside and operated largely outside of the developing Hollywood studio system. Although not as well known as Oscar Micheaux and the Johnson Brothers of the Lincoln Motion Picture Company, Richard E. Norman and his Norman Film Manufacturing Company in Florida produced a number of popular and highly-regarded race films with prominent Black performers. The one sheet offered here showcases the bull-wrangling stunts in The Bull-Dogger starring Bill Pickett, a member of the National Rodeo Hall of Fame who is credited with creating the bull-dogging technique of a rider grabbing a steer by the horns and wrestling it to the ground. The poster has a wonderful close artwork portrait of Mr. Pickett, and it presents with bright color and has only light edge and fold wear, small chips and fold separations, mild scuffs or smudges, edge toning, and minor tears. The upper crossfold separation has been replaced and received light touch-up. Part of the blank borders were neatly trimmed off, but only blank white paper was affected.
