Description
What Price Hollywood? (RKO, 1932). Overall: Fine/Very Fine. Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14").Never before sold at Heritage as a complete set, we are proud to be finally offering the full set of eight lobby cards for What Price Hollywood?. Offering a candid and emotionally charged look at the dark side of Hollywood fame, this 1932 pre-Code drama, directed by George Cukor, is often regarded as a precursor to A Star Is Born (1937) and its later remakes. Constance Bennett stars as an ambitious waitress who ascends to stardom with the help of a prominent but alcoholic director, played by Lowell Sherman. As her career flourishes, her personal life crumbles - her husband, portrayed by Neil Hamilton, leaves her due to the pressures of her rising fame, and she becomes entangled once more with Sherman, whose battle with alcoholism ultimately ends in the tragic taking of his own life in her bedroom, triggering scandal and jeopardizing her success. Loosely inspired by real-life industry figures, the film explores themes of addiction, self-destruction, and the fleeting nature of celebrity. With Cukor's sharp direction, Bennett's standout performance, and an unflinching critique of Hollywood's relentless pursuit of stardom, What Price Hollywood? remains a compelling and poignant classic. Nearly one hundred years old, these lobby cards contain some imperfections, such as light edge wear and creases, pinholes and pinhole tears, smudges and scuffs, mostly small stains, a couple of scratches, and minor toning.
