Description

Two Gun Betty (Pathé, 1918). Swedish Linocut One Sheet (21.5" X 33.5").
A ranch owner (Lee Shumway) is in need of some new cowhands and young Bessie Barriscale disguises herself as a man to land the job. A Heritage first, this art deco inspired poster created for the Swedish market features Barriscale with guns drawn as she masquerades as cowboy "Bob." The poster was produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. Heritage is pleased to present several Linocut Swedish posters in this auction, as they are exceedingly rare, with only a very few produced over a short period of time. The poster has a small chip in Bessie's left hand near the crossfold, faint wrinkling, and light fold and edge wear. Folded, Very Fine-.
