His Picture in the Papers (S.A. Lynch, 1916). Very Good+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").Prior to becoming the public's favorite swashbuckling hero, Douglas Fairbanks rose to stardom in a series of romantic comedies under the direction of John Emerson and writer Anita Loos, the authoress of the famed novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This one is a screwball comedy about a young man whose father owns a health food empire, based on vegetarianism, but the son is a meat eater, so he and his father have nothing to do with each other. But the son wants to marry a young woman, and her father will only agree if he has a half interest in his father's company, so he begs his father to do so, and his father agrees, but only if he can "get his picture in the papers." So the hero does all kinds of publicity stunts, including beating up a champion boxer, but none of them get covered by the newspapers, until finally, he happens to see a group of crooks robbing a train by causing a derailment, and that makes him a national hero, and he is on the covers of all the newspapers, and his father gives him the half interest and he is able to marry his girl! These comedies often made good use of Fairbanks' natural athleticism, this one in particular showcasing his physical endurance with car crashes, boxing matches, and beat downs against cops and train-robbing thugs alike. Note that Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. (his son, Douglas Jr. was also a very accomplished actor) was a Broadway stage actor who did not move to Hollywood until 1915, when he was 32, and his son was 6. Even though Fairbanks seemed on the older side to be an "action hero," his great physical skills made his movies major successes, and by 1918 he was Hollywood's most popular and highest paid actor. He started an affair with Mary Pickford (then the highest paid actress) and in 1918 he was divorced, and he married Pickford in 1920. Also note that Triangle, the studio that produced this film, had a deal with S.A. Lynch Enterprises that shared distribution rights for certain productions (with S.A. Lynch primarily distributing outside the major states), where both companies would release advertisements concurrently, making this an original poster, and it has a great stone litho image of Fairbanks and his pretty co-star Rene Boucicault, with the intriguing tagline, "A story of a pickle manufacturer and his itch for publicity." Prior to restoration, this extremely rare poster had fold wear with extra creases and paper loss at the crossfolds, the borders were trimmed with some loss extending into the background, and small scratches. The background and title area have been airbrushed in addition to the borders.
