Description
Victory (Paramount, 1919). Fine/Very Fine. Hand Color Tinted Lobby Card (11" X 14").A silent drama directed by Maurice Tourneur, Victory is based on Joseph Conrad's novel of the same name and stars Jack Holt, Seena Owen, and Wallace Beery. The film follows Axel Heyst, a reclusive European living on a remote island whose solitude is shattered when he rescues a woman from peril, drawing the attention of ruthless criminals. Tourneur's expert direction, combined with striking cinematography and atmospheric visuals, crafts a suspenseful and emotionally resonant adaptation of Conrad's work, often praised for its moody, expressionistic style. A notable aspect of Victory is the presence of Lon Chaney in the role of the menacing Ricardo, captured here in this surviving lobby card. Known as "The Man of a Thousand Faces," Chaney was a pioneering silent film actor celebrated for his groundbreaking makeup techniques and deeply expressive performances, often portraying tormented, grotesque, or tragic figures. Rising to fame with The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Chaney's innovative approach to acting left an enduring legacy in horror and character-driven cinema. Victory was later remade in 1930 as Dangerous Paradise and again in 1940 under its original title. Remarkably, the 1919 version still survives in its complete form at the Library of Congress and is available on DVD, preserving a piece of early Hollywood history. This card shows some understandable wear for its age, including minor edge wear, small corner bends, pinholes, slight creases, a few smudges, scuffs, and scratches, and mostly minute stains.
