Description

Beau Brummel (Warner Bros., 1924). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.75") Style A.
After an absence from the screen for over a year due to the massively successful stage production of Hamlet, John Barrymore returned to the silver screen once again, this time as England's answer to Casanova, Beau Brummell. Based on a 1890 play, the film sees Barrymore as the lowly army captain who is able to climb the social ladder to become London's most charming and fashionable dandy, thanks to his close friendship with the Prince Regent, but who falls from grace when he insults his royal patron. Barrymore was well cast, as he himself was something of a libertine and matinee idol. During the period of filming, he engaged in a passionate affair with 18-year-old Mary Astor (who went on to become a major star of the 1930s and 1940s), who plays his love interest who is forced to marry another man. Barrymore appeared in a number of classic movies (including the 1919 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1920 version of Sherlock Holmes, Twentieth Century, Counselor at Law, Dinner at Eight, and Grand Hotel). He was nicknamed "The Great Profile" (due to his posters and photographs always favoring him from the left-hand side, and this poster is no exception) and he was widely considered to be the finest stage actor of his time. Prior to the establishment of the Academy Awards, Rudolph Valentino commissioned a prize, dubbed "The Valentino" after himself, to recognize outstanding achievement in film acting. The honor was bestowed one time only, to John Barrymore, for this film. This rare one-sheet features a stunning colorful stone litho image of Barrymore. Touchup has been applied to chips in the borders, paper loss in the folds, and tears throughout. The borders and blue background have been airbrushed and color touchup has been applied to his cloak. The linen has been trimmed to the borders.
