Description

Around the World in 80 Days by Saul Bass (United Artists, 1956). Very Fine+. Matted Original Preliminary End Credit Paintings on Acetate (2) (20" X 15").
These Heritage firsts come from the production of Saul Bass' famed animated credits at the end of the Academy Award winner Around the World in 80 Days. It was the first instance of an extended title sequence at the close of a major film, a sight more common in movie theaters today. These pieces served as preliminary examples of the animation scene, with each piece consisting of painted layers of acetate that have been fixed to a matt board with masking tape at the corners. At the top of the front matt boards are notes handwritten in pencil detailing various changes requested for the sequence, such as redrawing Ronald Colman's clothes to a white outline and having him hold a series of railroad tickets rather than a telescope, or switching Charles Boyer's portrait to pair with Evelyn Keyes. The artwork show wear expected from the creation process and typical handling, such as corner bumps and small surface scuffs. The front and back of each matt board have pasted official snipes from the Michael Todd Company in the corners, the studio that produced the entire film.
