Description

West of Zanzibar (MGM, 1928). Very Fine. Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Born to deaf-mute parents in 1883, Lon Chaney excelled as a stage actor and even ran a theater company with his brother before transitioning to film in 1912. Quickly gaining recognition for his mastery of makeup and transformative performances, he became known for portraying menacing, macabre, and deeply melancholic characters. In 1923, Universal Pictures President Carl Laemmle revolutionized the horror genre with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, casting Chaney as Quasimodo-the only actor capable of bringing Victor Hugo's tragic figure to life. Two years later, Chaney took complete creative control over the makeup for his legendary role as the disfigured composer in The Phantom of the Opera, cementing his status as the "Man of a Thousand Faces." In 1928, he teamed up with director Tod Browning for the tenth and final time on West of Zanzibar, delivering a haunting performance as Phroso, a vengeful magician seeking retribution against the man (Lionel Barrymore) who crippled him and stole his wife. This beautiful lobby card, depicting Chaney alongside co-star Mary Brian, has had no restoration and is still as vibrant and fresh as the day it was printed nearly a century ago, with just the barest trace of foxing and tiny corner creases. A remarkable piece for the Chaney collector.
