Description

Lorelei of the Sea (Marine Film Company, 1917). Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41") Alternate Title: A Modern Lorelei.
After several decades as an accomplished stage actor and just one year after his successful debut in Where Are My Children?, Tyrone Power Sr. stars in this, the Henry Otto South sea romantic drama of 1917 and stars Frances Burnham as the leading lady. Otto had recently produced Undine for Universal and Mister 44 for Yorke-Metro before becoming the head of direction for The Marine Film Company, owned by M. Phillip Hansen. This was the first feature from Marine Film, and most of the scenes were filmed on location at the Santa Barbara Islands and was well received by audiences thanks to its picturesque photography. Adapted from a story by Richard Willis and originally titled Lorelei of the Sea, but also release as A Modern Lorelei, the film features a lonely girl (Burnham) living on an isolated South Sea island, who pretends to be the famous nymph from ancient legends whose songs would attract men, in the hopes she attract a male suitor and she does attract a young sailor (Power) who nearly drowns to be near her. After saving his life the two realize the man was adopted by someone whose daughter was kidnapped, resulting in the discovery of the young girl as the long-lost daughter, thus finding herself both a husband and also a father. A point of significance in the film, Tyrone Power is at one point supported by 75 diving girls who form artistic pictures in the water. Featuring a charming portrait of lovely Frances Burnham, this stone litho one sheet (likely the only surviving example of this poster) has been professionally restored and has received corrections to fold wear, touchup to a few pinholes, and a minor tear in the bottom border. Still visible are a few faint smudges.
