Description

Theda Bara Framed Portrait Photo (Fox, 1915). Fine+. Framed Portrait Photo (10.25" X 12.25").
After starring in A Fool There Was, Theda Bara became an overnight sensation. Her role as a deadly seductress fueled the rise of the Vamp archetype, steeped in exoticism and sexual domination that was controversial for its time. Although primarily known for her roles as a temptress, such as in Cleopatra and Salome, she showed her acting range when she also portrayed heroines in Under Two Flags and Romeo and Juliet, but she returned to vamp roles because 1910s audiences preferred her playing a "bad girl". At the height of her fame she earned $4000 a week and her films were often shown simultaneously and continuously in multiple theaters up to six times a day. Sadly, most of her films perished in a vault fire at Fox in 1937, leaving only a handful of her films for modern audiences to view. Today she is primarily known through numerous photographs, production images, and a few ultra-rare movie posters. Offered here is a wonderful close portrait photo of Bara dressed in dazzling white to match her beloved Russian wolfhound, Belva. The photo has been personally autographed by the actress and dated "1916." The photo displays signs of toning, and comes in a beautiful frame that shows some surface wear.
