Description

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Universal, 1923). MP Graded Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Lon Chaney is magnificent as Victor Hugo's hunchback bell-ringer, Quasimodo, in the classic Universal film from 1923. Along with his makeup, Chaney strapped on a hump weighing 40 pounds to his back, and wore a harness weighing another 30. The film helped set a standard for many later horror films, including Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera in 1925. It brought Universal Studios into the limelight and is one of the top grossing silent films of all time. The film was in constant release and there is additional paper that was issued on the title that is not labeled as a re-release. Lobbies were issued in both hand-tinted color as well as black and white (greenish tinted). The black and white lobbies are thought to be from the earliest release. Only minimal handling can be noted on this title card, including smudging on the right side. A true "bell-ringer" itself, this card features cast portraits floating above a beautiful rendering of an early 19th century Parisian crowd, gathered in front of Notre Dame in all of its Gothic splendor. MP Graded Very Fine-.
